Regulations for the Award of Degree

1.        (a)   DEGREE AWARDED

The degree of the faculty shall be awarded as First Class Honours, Second Class Honours (Upper division), Second Class Honours (lower division), and Third Class Honours. Any student who is not able to make any of these classes of degrees may, subject to conditions approved by Senate, be awarded a Pass Degree.

              (b)   ASSESSMENTS

For each semester grading, assessments consist of two parts; Continuous assessment (30%) and final examination (70%)

 

2.                 (a)   Age Limit: To be admitted for any degree course in the Faculty, candidates must have attained a minimum of 16 years of age.

(b)   Admission to 100 level: Admission into the Faculty shall be through JAMB and the Pre-Degree Programme of LAUTECH. UTME candidates are expected to have credit passes in five subjects including Mathematics and English Language in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (GCE) ‘O’ level.

(c)   Admission to Direct Entry: The Faculty admits candidates through direct entry. The requirements for direct en try are as follows:

i.     HSC/GCE (‘A’ level) passes in two subjects with WASC GCE (‘O’ level) credit passes (including English Language and Mathematics) and three other subjects at not more than two sittings.

ii.    Students transferring from a recognized university shall have their transcripts assessed and must pass the required courses in relevant departments. They must also possess the ‘O’ level requirements as stipulated by the University.

(d)   Deferment of Admission: Students who have genuine reason(s) for the deferment of admission should write, stating vividly the reason(s) for the deferment, through the Head of Department, to the Faculty Board. The Board, after consideration of the request, shall tender such a request at the senate for final approval. However, to qualify for deferment of admission, a student must have a registered and matriculated.

 

3.                 REGISTRATION OF STUDENTS

                            i.        Students newly offered admission into this Faculty, must undergo all registration and matriculation processes.

                           ii.        Students need to register for courses at the beginning of every semester. They are expected to consult the staff advisers in their departments for appropriate guidance.

                         iii.        Payment of some stipulated fees shall be regarded as part of the registration procedure.

                         iv.        Normal course registration for each semester takes place within the prescribed of two weeks. Late registration may be allowed on payment of a penalty fee to be decided by the University from time to time.

                          v.        Before students could register for courses, they have to meet the prerequisites or co-requisites (where applicable), prescribed for the courses by each department.

 

4.                 ADDING AND DROPPING OF COURSES

Students could add to or delete the courses they have already registered for. Such an alteration, which can only be made with the approval of the adviser, the Head of Department and the Dean, must be effected within four weeks of resumption for the semester. The students concerned are required to obtain an ‘add’ and ‘drop’ Form to do this.

 

5.                 REGULATIONS FOR CHANGE OF COURSE

Students could be allowed to change their course. Such students who should complete the necessary Form within a stipulated period, must satisfy the minimum entry requirements. They must, as well, have been duly released by their departments or Faculty before they can be accepted in the new Department.

 

6.                 WITHDRAWAL BECAUSE OF POOR ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Any student who fails to attain a CGPA of, at least, 1.00 for any consecutive semesters shall be advised to withdraw from the Faculty. The student should have been placed on probation at the end of the first semester.

 

7. (a)  PROCEDURE FOR INVESTIGATING ALLEGED EXAMINATION MISCONDUCT

                                    i.        Whenever a student is caught for examination offence, the case shall be reported to the Invigilator/Supervisor in the Hall immediately.

                                   ii.        The invigilator shall fill the necessary Form reporting the case of examination misconduct and the student should be made to write a statement on his/her involvement. Thereafter, the student shall be allowed to continue with the examination.

                                 iii.        The Invigilator/Supervisor shall report formally to the Deputy Registrar, Academic Affairs.

                                 iv.        The student will then be invited to appear before the Examination Malpractice panel to defend himself/herself verbally.

                                  v.        The Examination Malpractice Panel shall read the offence(s) alleged to have been committed by the student and allow him/her to defend himself/herself in the light of his/her statement, which he/she had earlier on submitted.

                                 vi.        The reports and recommendation of Examination Malpractice Panel shall be forwarded to the Senate for consideration and approval.

                               vii.        Student may appeal against the decision of the Senate within 14 days of communication of the decision to him/her.

 

(b)         ACADEMIC MISCONDUCT AND STUDENT DISCIPLINE

                                    i.        Any action which prejudices the integrity of the University Examination shall be considered to be an academic misconduct and shall be punishable by appropriate disciplinary action.

                                   ii.        With respect to all proceedings under the University’s rules and regulations in relation to academic discipline, each student shall presumed innocent until the contrary is established.

 

(c)         EXAMINATION OFFENCES AND SANCTIONS

The wave of examination malpractices has been on the increase over the past few years. This makes the university to feel seriously concerned on the quality as well as the integrity of its degrees and recommended sanctions for various examination offences.

 

Listed below are examination offences and sanctions prescribed for them:
